Most of us can definitely do with ANY extra exercise! But we just don’t have the time to spend in the gym to sculpt perfect bodies.

Here are six handy tips to make sure you get at least some exercise during your busy day:

1. No parking?

Are you one of those people who slowly drive up and down in the parking area in the shopping mall to try to get to the closest spot to the entrance, ignoring the open spaces further away? In the process, your blood pressure rises violently when the family of six with a carrycot and twenty shopping bags can’t get their act together and go.

Tip: There’s a better and healthier way. Park your car further away from your destination and take a brisk walk.

2. Up and down you go!

How often do we wait to use the lift instead of taking the stairs? Yet, we go to the gym and use the Stairclimber. Crazy, right?

Tip: You can burn a significant amount of calories if you opt for the stairs as often as possible. Try increasing your pace as you get fitter.

3. Weightlifting

Using trolleys with a mind of their own at the supermarket does your stress levels no good. Plus, it’s the lazy way of doing shopping.

Tip: Use a shopping basket instead, and carry your own shopping bags for a change. By doing this, you’ll give your upper body a workout. Try walking all the way to the car without resting.

4. Squeeze and lift and squeeze and lift

We all spend hours standing in queues – at the bank, the post office, the grocery store etc.

Tip: Use the time to squeeze your butt, pull in your stomach muscles and do calf and toe raises. (Remember to do it unobtrusively!)

5. Get handy

Got flimsy forearms? Have nothing to do with your hands at work? (Don’t tell your boss!)

Tip: A good way of developing strong forearms is to get your hands on one of those little rubber stress-reliever balls. Some people play with them at work, in front of the television or while they speak on the phone. They’re also great for stress release.

6. Flex and stretch

Is the only time you flex your muscles when that son of a gun swerves in front of you on the road?

Tip: Be conscious of flexing your muscles throughout the day. It can make the world of difference to your muscle tone. Take time out during your busy schedule to do a few simple exercises. For example, sit down, extend your legs and point your toes. Repeat 10 times.
