Many of us lead busy lives, and sometimes trying to balance work, family and friend commitments can lead us to have feelings of dissatisfaction. When we feel tired or stressed, our happiness levels are likely to drop. 

Listed below are some suggestions of simple and effective measures you can take to help you to feel happy in your everyday life.  


Help Others 

There are many ways to help others, such as volunteering, donating to a charity, or simply helping out a friend. 

Doing a good deed has a positive effect on the body. It can improve self-esteem and ease feelings of stress. Performing a genuine random act of kindness can even cause the nervous system to release endorphins, which are 'feel-good' chemicals, known for boosting happiness levels.  

Helping others may also help with reflection, prompting us to take note of the good things in our lives and recognize how fortunate we are.  


Practice Good Self-Care  

Eating well, getting a sufficient amount of sleep, regular exercise, and taking a moment to reflect are all things that can help us to feel happier. 

Healthy eating not only has a positive impact on our physical health, but it can also be beneficial to our mental health and wellbeing. Eating a healthy and balanced diet means you are less likely to become sick, and that you may recover more quickly from common illnesses. Healthy eating can help to regulate sleep patterns and raise energy levels. Having a positive relationship with food can also enhance feelings of body confidence and improved mood.  

Regular exercise can naturally enhance feelings of happiness. Any form of exercise can be beneficial for the body and for improving mental health. When we exercise, the body releases endorphins, which make us feel happy. Exercise can lower stress levels and reduce anxiety. It can also help us to achieve restful sleep, giving us more energy during the day.  

Meditation can have a positive effect on happiness levels. Living busy lives can mean that we may rarely take time to focus on our breathing or to reflect. Taking a moment each day to sit down and focus solely on your breathing can help to lower stress levels. Regular meditation can be energizing for our bodies and can help us to feel more relaxed and less anxious, making happiness more achievable.   


Disconnect from Social Media 

Spending prolonged amounts of time visiting social media sites can lead us to seek constant validation from others. Often the people we desire recognition from are not even part of our everyday 'real' lives, and sometimes they are even strangers. This constant need for acceptance can cause stress levels to rise and happiness levels to drop.  

To feel happier in your everyday life, it is important to take time to disconnect from technology and spend time with the people you love. Pay more attention to your 'real' life. Share experiences with family and friends and make wonderful memories together.  


Stand Tall and Smile! 

Our posture and facial expressions have a big impact on how we feel. Walking with our shoulders back and head held high can give the outward impression of confidence. Good posture can also make us feel inwardly more cheerful.  

Similarly, when we smile, it has a positive emotional effect on the way we feel. So, the act of smiling can actually make us feel happier.  


We all go through times of sadness and have days where happiness seems difficult to achieve. If you want to help yourself to feel happier in your everyday life, try doing a good deed, remembering to practice good self-care, take time to connect with the people you love, or just stand tall and smile.
